Formula
Eastern time = Zulu − 4 h during daylight saving (EDT), or Zulu − 5 h in standard time (EST). Zulu = Eastern + 4 h (EDT) or + 5 h (EST).
US daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday of March at 02:00 local (07:00Z) and ends on the first Sunday of November at 02:00 local (06:00Z). Supported dates: 2007 to 2099.
Zulu time is simply Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the single clock that aviation uses worldwide. To convert it to US Eastern time, subtract 4 hours during daylight saving (EDT) or 5 hours in standard time (EST). The converter above does this for any date from 2007 to 2099 and switches between EDT and EST for you.
How to use the Zulu time converter
- Choose a direction: Zulu to Eastern if you are reading a METAR, TAF or NOTAM, or Eastern to Zulu if you are filing or planning a flight.
- Type the time in 24-hour format, such as 1830 or 18:30. A trailing Z is accepted.
- Check the date. It matters because the offset depends on whether daylight saving is in effect that day.
- Read the converted time, the date it falls on (it can be the previous or next day), the Zulu date-time group and the Eastern zone in effect.
- Use "Copy link to this result" to share the exact conversion.
How it is calculated
Zulu time is UTC, so no daylight saving is ever applied to it. Eastern time is UTC−5 in standard time (EST) and UTC−4 in daylight saving time (EDT).
- Eastern = Zulu − 4 h when EDT applies, or Zulu − 5 h when EST applies.
- Zulu = Eastern + 4 h when EDT applies, or Eastern + 5 h when EST applies.
The United States rule in force since 2007 puts daylight saving time from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November. The change happens at 02:00 local time, which is 07:00Z in March and 06:00Z in November. The tool applies this rule, and the standard UTC definition of Zulu, to the date you enter.
Quick reference for the Eastern zone
| Period | Zone | Offset from Zulu | 1200Z equals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second Sunday of March to first Sunday of November | EDT | UTC−4 | 08:00 |
| First Sunday of November to second Sunday of March | EST | UTC−5 | 07:00 |
Frequently asked questions
Is Zulu time the same as UTC and GMT?
Zulu time and UTC are the same clock. The letter Z (Zulu in the phonetic alphabet) marks the zero-hour time zone. GMT is practically the same for everyday purposes, though UTC is the formal standard.
Does Zulu time change with daylight saving?
No. Zulu stays fixed all year. Only the local offset changes, which is why the same Zulu time lands an hour apart on the Eastern clock in summer and winter.
How do I read a time like 151830Z?
It is a date-time group: the first two digits are the day of the month (15), the next four are hours and minutes in Zulu (18:30), and the letter Z confirms the time zone. Weather reports often use this format.
Why did my result fall on a different day?
Because Eastern time is 4 or 5 hours behind Zulu, an evening Zulu time can still be earlier in the afternoon locally, while an early-morning Zulu time belongs to the previous evening in the Eastern zone. The result date shows this.
What happens during the daylight saving changeover?
On the March changeover day the local hour from 2:00 to 3:00 does not exist, so the tool tells you instead of guessing. On the November day the hour from 1:00 to 2:00 happens twice, and the tool uses the first one (EDT) and says so.
This tool is a conversion aid. Always check official flight-planning and weather sources before a flight.
Once you know your arrival time in local Eastern terms, it is easy to plan the rest of the trip. You can match your landing to a sensible check-in time and book accommodation near where you are headed, so a late arrival does not leave you searching for a room.
